Ingredients

For the Patty
  • 1 pound Ground Beef Use high-quality beef for the best flavor and juiciness.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust according to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper Adjust according to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder Fresh garlic can be substituted for a more vibrant flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce Enhances umami; soy sauce is a tasty alternative.
For the Mushroom Topping
  • 1 tablespoon Butter A mix with olive oil is great for sautéing.
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil Feel free to use margarine or another oil if preferred.
  • 8 ounces Mushrooms (Button or Cremini) Use fresh mushrooms for a rich topping.
  • 1 small Onion Optional; brings sweetness and depth.
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh Thyme Dried thyme can be used in smaller quantities.
For the Cheese and Bread
  • 4 slices Swiss Cheese Melts beautifully; provolone or mozzarella are excellent substitutes.
  • 4 pieces Burger Buns Choose fresh, high-quality buns.

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Spatula
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

Steps
  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently to avoid overworking the meat, then divide into four equal portions and shape into patties.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat, add a tablespoon of butter and olive oil. Sauté sliced mushrooms and onion for about 8-10 minutes until golden brown and tender, adding garlic and thyme for the last couple of minutes.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, checking for desired doneness.
  4. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese atop each patty and cover the skillet to melt the cheese.
  5. Toast the burger buns cut side down in a separate skillet or on the grill until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Assemble the burger with the cheesy patty, sautéed mushroom mixture, and any additional toppings you desire, then top with the other bun half.
