Ingredients

For the Pudding
  • 2 cups Whole Milk Provides creaminess and richness; substitute with skim milk for a lighter version but expect less creaminess.
  • 3/4 cup Granulated Sugar Adds the perfect touch of sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup All-purpose Flour Serves as the thickening agent for your cozy pudding.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt Elevates the overall flavor profile, balancing the sweetness.
  • 3 large Egg Yolks Contributes to the luscious texture and depth of the pudding.
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract Essential for flavor; always opt for pure vanilla for the best results.
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted Butter Enhances richness while helping to achieve a smooth texture.
For Layering
  • 3 medium Ripe Bananas Offers natural sweetness and a soft texture; slice just before using to prevent browning.
  • 1 box Vanilla Wafers Provides crunch and structure; ensure an even layer for stability in each bite.
For Topping (Optional)
  • 1 cup Whipped Cream Add this creamy delight on top for an extra layer of flavor; garnishing is a plus!

Equipment

  • medium saucepan
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Serving dish

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine whole milk, granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, and salt over medium heat. Whisk continuously until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble, approximately 5-7 minutes.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the large egg yolks until smooth. Gradually stir in about a cup of the hot milk mixture, ensuring the egg yolks don't curdle.
  3. Continue cooking the pudding over medium heat, stirring constantly for an additional 2-3 minutes until the pudding has a velvety smooth texture.
  4. In a serving dish, start layering with vanilla wafers at the bottom, followed by half of the sliced bananas, and top with half of the pudding.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  6. Just before serving, remove the banana pudding from the fridge and top it off with whipped cream.
