Step‑by‑Step Instructions for Taro Rolls
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 4 cups of bread flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, and 2 teaspoons of instant yeast. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of warm milk, 1/2 cup of poi, 1 egg, and 1/4 cup of softened butter until smooth. Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Add a few drops of purple food coloring to the dough and continue mixing until the color is uniformly distributed.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface or use a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Divide the kneaded dough into 15 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Place the dough balls in a greased 9x13 baking dish, leaving a bit of space between each. Cover the dish with a clean kitchen towel and allow the dough to rise in a warm area for about 1 hour.
  5. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Once the rolls have risen beautifully, place the baking dish in the oven. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
  6. Remove the Taro Rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly in the baking dish. After about 10 minutes, transfer them to a wire rack to cool further.
