Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine 1 cup of warm milk, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast. Let sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk the frothy yeast mixture with 4 cups of flour, 2 eggs, 1/4 cup of softened butter, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, the zest of one orange, and 1 teaspoon of salt until a soft dough forms.
  3. Cover the bowl with a towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 2 hours, until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough gently, divide it into three portions, and roll each into a rope. Braid the ropes together tightly and transfer to a lined baking sheet.
  5. Cover the braided loaf and let it rise in a warm area for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding.
  7. Allow to cool on a wire rack for about 15-20 minutes before glazing.
